How a Selbyville Family Transformed an Ordinary Wall into the Heart of Their Home

When a family in Selbyville, Delaware contacted Behind Closed Doors Custom Closets & Cabinetry, they were looking for much more than a place to mount a television. They envisioned a beautiful focal point for their home where family movie nights, holidays, entertaining friends, and quiet evenings together could all take place.

The existing wall offered plenty of space, but very little function or visual impact. They wanted a custom entertainment center that felt like fine furniture, complemented their home’s architecture, and provided thoughtful storage for everything from electronics and wine to decorative pieces collected over the years.

After discovering Behind Closed Doors through a Google search, they reached out to discuss several projects throughout their home, including custom closets, a laundry room, and a statement media center that would become one of the home’s defining features.

Every Great Design Starts With Listening

Our design process always begins with understanding the people who will use the space.

Before taking measurements or discussing finishes, we spend time learning about our clients and how they live. We ask questions about how they entertain, how they use the room every day, what they would like to display, what should remain hidden, and how they want the space to feel once completed.

These conversations become the foundation for every design decision that follows.

The goal is never simply to build cabinetry. The goal is to create a space that is beautiful, functional, and designed specifically for the family who will enjoy it every day.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Once the initial vision was established, we visited the home for a detailed field measure. Beyond taking precise measurements, we evaluated room dimensions, electrical locations, architectural details, traffic flow, and planned storage needs to ensure every cabinet was designed specifically for the space.

With the measurements confirmed, our designers transformed the family’s ideas into a fully customized entertainment center crafted from plain-sawn white oak with a custom stain developed to perfectly complement the home’s flooring. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, from the custom-built planter to the plantation shutter-style cabinet doors that discreetly conceal electronic equipment while allowing proper ventilation to prevent heat buildup.

The design features full-height display cabinetry with decorative glass doors, integrated LED lighting, custom wine storage, dual beverage refrigerators, and a premium white quartz countertop, all supplied and installed by Behind Closed Doors. Push-to-open hardware eliminates the need for visible handles, creating a clean, contemporary aesthetic that allows the natural beauty of the cabinetry to take center stage.

Lighting That Changes the Entire Experience

One of the most remarkable features of this project isn’t immediately obvious during the day.

Natural sunlight fills the room, highlighting the warmth of the wood grain and creating a fresh, open feeling that perfectly complements the coastal design.

As daylight fades, the entertainment center transforms.

Integrated LED lighting softly illuminates each display cabinet, accenting decorative objects while adding warmth and depth throughout the room. Additional lighting highlights the upper display niche and custom wine storage, creating layers of light that completely change the atmosphere.

The entertainment center becomes more than cabinetry.

It becomes an experience.

During the day, it feels bright and inviting. In the evening, it creates a warm ambiance that is perfect for entertaining guests, sharing a bottle of wine, or simply relaxing with family after a long day.

Thoughtfully designed lighting doesn’t simply illuminate a room. It changes how the space feels.

Crafted With Precision

Once every design detail was approved, the project moved into fabrication.

Every cabinet was manufactured specifically for this home. Unlike stock cabinetry, each component was built to the exact dimensions captured during the field measure.

Panels were precision cut, cabinetry assembled, hardware prepared, lighting integrated, and every component inspected before leaving the shop.

This level of craftsmanship allows each installation to fit seamlessly while maintaining the quality and durability expected from custom cabinetry.

Professional Installation

Our installation team carefully prepared the home, protected surrounding finishes, and installed each cabinet in sequence to ensure perfect alignment and fit.

The quartz countertop was installed, decorative glass doors adjusted, lighting connected, beverage refrigerators integrated, and every door, drawer, and piece of hardware was inspected and fine-tuned.

Attention to detail continues until the final walkthrough.

Every reveal, alignment, finish, and lighting element is reviewed to ensure the completed project reflects the standards our clients expect.

From the lead arriving in March through the family’s April 1st closing on their new Evergreen Homes residence, the project moved quickly toward a shared goal of completing the entertainment center, two primary closets, and laundry room by the end of May.

We are grateful for the opportunity to help customize this beautiful new home and create spaces that this family will enjoy for many years to come.
